We are finally getting some cooler weather in central Texas. Although I don’t know how long it will last, it can be 30 degrees one day in Texas and the next day it will be 80 degrees. This could also happen in the same day. There have been times where I left for work in the morning completely bundled up because it was freezing, and then by the afternoon I was sweating. Texas plays tricks on you.
On the nights when it is cold, I love to settle down with a nice, warm hot chocolate. I hated using packets though, they tasted artificial to me and I like a little more flavor. And I would rather make my own out of real food.
So I made this nice fall-spiced hot chocolate the other night and it was very soothing. And it’s nice and healthy with spices like cinnamon and turmeric that have anti-inflammatory benefits, and raw cacao powder is a super-food with some great health benefits. Sweeten it with honey and you have a delicious drink to sip free of artificial flavors or refined sugar!
- 2 cups nut milk
- 2 Tbsp cacao powder
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 Tbsp honey
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ginger
- 1/8 tsp turmeric powder
- dash nutmeg
- pinch sea salt
-
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the almond milk, spices, honey, vanilla and sea salt. Whisk for about 5 minutes, combining the flavors well, until it is hot but not burning.
-
Remove from heat and add the cacao powder. Whisk well to combine.
-
Serve in a mug. Sip and enjoy!
