PaleoFX happens every year in Austin, and for the past three years I have wanted to go, yet something always came up. Two years ago a friend came into town, and last year I had drill. This year, my favorite little paleo food truck, Picnik Austin was giving away a free ticket. I don’t get too many chances to visit Picnik since it is a bit far from where I live, so I let my husband know about the giveaway and we drove down to Austin after our workout to order a butter coffee and a paleo blondie, which was delicious!
I ending up winning the ticket, and I was pretty excited. I finally was able to go!
We had a great time and it was really cool to see all of the different goodies they had there. I even caught a glimpse of Juli Bauer of PaleOMG!
There were tons of vendors, and it was great to find out about all of these different products and services I had not known about.
Too Fit USA had a booth, and were giving away a container of their pre or post-workout mix, along with a shaker. All you had to do was get the highest amount of calories on either the rower or the assault bike in 30 seconds. David decided to give it a try. He got 21 calories on the rower and 18 on the assault bike. The assault bike was pretty rough though, and it took him a while to recover. Later on, we saw that someone had beaten his rower time, but he was still in first place for the assault bike. We were about to claim his prize, but another guy decided to get on the assault bike, and he beat his score. So no prize for David.
However, I thought perhaps I could beat the female time. I tried the rower, but was short on beating the posted female high score. But no female had yet attempted the assault bike. I had 30 minutes left until they would choose a winner, so all I had to get was 1 calorie (and have no one try after I did). I had never done the assault bike before so I didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t go as hard as I could have because of my injury, but I still ended up with a score of 8 calories. We walked around a bit before going back to claim my prize since no other female had attempted it. In retrospect, it probably wasn’t the best idea since my injury started hurting a bit afterwards.
I chose their natural post-workout recovery mix, Rally. I have yet to try this product yet, so a review will come later.
So here are all the products that I came home with, some were free samples and a few we purchased.
Zevia – (grab-bag freebie) I already drink Zevia on a regular basis, so I was excited to see two free sodas in the grab-bag. They are zero calories, zero sugar, and no artificial sweeteners. They are naturally sweetened with stevia and monk fruit. They taste fantastic and a great way to curb my soda craving without all the artificial stuff. My favorite is the Grape Flavor.
pureWOD Build – (grab-bag freebie) I like this protein powder because it is only 3 ingredients–beef protein isolate, cocoa powder and stevia. I didn’t mind the taste too much, but I did miz it with cashew milk and a banana. I could tell that if I had mixed it with just water or milk it might have tasted too protein-y (that’s a term, right?) But I love that it’s minimal ingredients and nothing artificial that I can’t pronounce.
Mother Dirt Shampoo – (grab-bag freebie) This is a very clean shampoo that is preservative-free, fragrance-free, sulfate-free and color-safe. I like it for all of these reasons. It is different than normal shampoos because it does not lather, but I find that whenever I use it I go more days in between washing’s. I personally do need to use conditioner as well because my dry, curly hair gets tangled very easily, but so far I do like what this shampoo is doing for me. I actually would like to try some of their other products, I have heard great things about their AO Mist.
Primal Kitchen Dark Chocolate Almond Bar – (grab-bag freebie) This was a little hard for me to chew, but that could be because it was refrigerated before I ate it. The taste was great though and I would definitely snack on these during the day.
Ancient Minerals Magnesium Oil Spray – (grab-bag freebie) I really love this spray. I have blogged about supplementing with Magnesium before, and I think I will be replacing the pills I have been taking with this spray. When my sample runs out I am definitely purchasing a bottle. Magnesium is especially important for athletes… strenuous exercise can increase magnesium requirements in athletes, and magnesium is necessary to produce ATP in our cells. I find it’s great for recovery, and after using this spray I am finding that I sleep much more easily. I love the spray because it absorbs into your skin and foregoes the need to take a pill, which can sometimes upset my digestive system. Beware though, the first time you use it your skin might tingle a bit. I didn’t mind the tingle and got used to it after the first couple of uses.
FitAID – (grab-bag freebie) I have had FitAID before, our grocery store sells it and I sometimes like to grab one to drink after a workout. I love the taste and the ingredients.
Paleo Powder – (free sample) I used this on some chicken the other night and it was pretty good! It’s a pretty good seasoning blend, but I can’t see myself buying a bottle because I feel like I can replicate it at home.
Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides – (free sample) I also have blogged about these peptides before in my Supplements entry. I mix these peptides in my coffee every morning and I love the benefits. It’s great for your hair, skin and joints, and it’s tasteless.
Nikki’s Coconut Butter (Honey Pecan Pie flavored) – (purchased) This stuff is tasty, I could eat it straight out of the jar! I like to put some in my smoothies. I got the Honey Pecan Pie flavor, but they have other flavors as well. Their other popular flavor is the Vanilla Cake Batter.
The Date Lady Chocolate Spread and Balsamic Vinegar – (purchased) We bought these after sampling them in their booth. The chocolate spread is great, almost tastes like frosting! And the Balsamic Vinegar is pretty tasty, I have used it on salads and on meat.
Onnit MCT Oil – (purchased) This was on sale for a pretty good deal so we bought a bottle. It mixes smoothly with my coffee or in my smoothies to add some good fat, but I couldn’t really tell you if I prefer it to other brands of MCT oil. I have had other brands, but I can’t really tell any difference. I do know that Onnit is a pretty reputable company though.
And that’s all! Did you go to Paleo FX? Or have you tried any of these products? I’d love to hear thoughts and opinions on these products or any others that were at Paleo FX that I missed.
