Winter is coming!
So I sound like a Game of Thrones nerd. I know that fall has only just started, and we have only had a few days in Texas where it was under 80 degrees in the afternoon so far. But if I make some soup and wish for it, the cooler weather will come, right?
It will come, and as soon as it does I’ll be wishing for warmer weather. I always forget how much I hate the cold until it gets here. I like wearing the boots and the sweaters and scarves, but after spending 5 minutes in the cold my teeth are chattering and I’m missing summer. When I moved to Texas, I thought winters would be similar to Florida winters. I wore flip-flops on Christmas most of the time in Florida. I thought…Texas is hot, right?
Well, Texas is pretty dang hot in the summer, but it gets much colder in the winter in Texas than it does in Florida. And then there is ice on the roads, and the highways close down, and you might even have a day off of work.
Funny story, I actually went into work on a day when we were closed. The highways were closed, but I didn’t need any highways to get to where I worked, and no one told me our office was closed. About an hour into work, a co-worker IM’ed me and asked me what I was doing. I told her I was working, and she said “Why, we’re closed!” I texted my President to confirm, and he immediately called me feeling bad that I somehow hadn’t gotten the message, and told me to go home.
The next day I went into work, the whiteboard at my desk had “Employee of the Month” written on it.
Anyway, although it’s not too cold in Texas yet, winter will be here before we know it. So here’s a soup recipe that is great for warming you up on a cold day. 🙂

I LOVE this Paleo Sweet Potato, Sausage and Sage Soup. The flavors blend really well together to make for a delicious, comforting soup for those chilly days. Something about sausage, sage and sweet potato just go so well together.
This Sausage and sweet potato soup was fairly easy to make, and it was super tasty. This is one of my husband and I’s favorite soups to eat in the winter.
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1/2 yellow onion diced
- 1 lb ground pork sausage
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 Tbsp finely chopped fresh sage
- 1/2 tsp rosemary
- 4 cups chicken bone broth
- 2 sweet potatoes diced medium
-
In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
-
Add the garlic and onion and cook until the onion is translucent, about 3-5 minutes.
-
Add in the sausage, salt, pepper, sage and rosemary. Stir with a wooden spoon, breaking sausage up. Cook until the sausage has browned, about 5 minutes.
-
Add the broth, water and sweet potatoes to the pot, and bring to a boil. Then lower the heat, cover, and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes, until the sausage has fully cooked and the sweet potatoes have softened.
-
Remove from heat and serve. Enjoy!
